Economy/Jobs
Steve's number one priority is putting Floridians back to work
and getting our economy moving again. To do this, we must:
- Keep taxes low
- Reduce burdensome regulations
- Enact litigation reform
- Reduce the size and scope of government
- Cut non-essential programs and streamline processes
These principles will ensure we create the economic climate
necessary to grow existing businesses and lure new businesses -
including corporate headquarters - to Florida. As a small
businessman, Steve understands the best way to spark the
entrepreneurial spirit and create jobs is for government to get out
of the way. We don't need bigger government, we need better
government.

Education
Making sure our kids and grandkids get a 21st century education
is a responsibility we all share. As a father of five children,
Steve believes we must equip our kids with the tools they need to
succeed in today's competitive environment. Improving our education
system is a critical component to our economic vitality, and a key
factor in businesses looking to relocate to Florida. As we work to
improve our education system, Steve supports:
- Accountability and measurement
- Rewarding good teachers
- Parent Choice
We have made great strides in the last several years, including
closing the achievement gap among minorities, and we must continue
on the path to success by insisting on high standards, measuring
success and rewarding achievement.
-
Tax Reform and Leaner Government
The last thing to do during these difficult economic times is
place more burden on the taxpayer. Just as families and businesses
are doing across Florida, government must make tough decisions and
live within its means. Steve supports reducing the tax burden on
small businesses, creating incentives to lure new businesses and
eliminating redundant programs.

Energy Independence and Security
The Deepwater Horizon crisis was a wake up call that our
reliance on foreign oil has grave implications for our future. As
Chairman of the Energy and Utilities Policy Committee, Steve is
working to develop a 21st century energy strategy that promotes a
holistic view of how we produce and consume energy. This includes
balancing our overall "energy portfolio", as well as bringing more
nuclear and renewable energy sources and leveraging our energy
investments towards a vibrant, clean-tech economy that will spur
job creation. Steve believes a focused strategy on energy
independence will attract significant investment in Florida,
diversify our economy and create jobs.

Illegal Immigration
The federal government's refusal to do its job has left states
with no choice but to fight against illegal immigration on their
own. Steve will back an Arizona-style law for Florida that will
give law enforcement the tools they need to combat illegal
immigration.
